Whether on your website, in press releases, or across social media, images often determine whether your content stands out—or gets lost in the constant stream of information. A strong message needs an equally strong visual to make an impact.

Yet, image selection is often underestimated in public relations or handled hastily under time pressure. The rule of thumb is simple: those who invest in eye-catching visuals stand out, and those who search intentionally find the best ones.

Why Pictures Truly Speak Louder Than Words

Images are far more than decorative elements. They communicate messages instantly, evoke emotion, and remain in the viewer’s memory long after the text is forgotten. The right image can inspire trust, spark empathy, and make complex ideas easy to grasp. In public relations, every visual is an extension of your brand communication and deserves the same care as every line of copy. That’s reason enough to take a closer look at what makes an image effective—and how to choose the best one for your story.

  • Your own photos or stock images – which is right for you? Not every story requires a photo shoot, but you want to maintain a distinctive image. To remain unique, you should invest in a basic stock of individual images: authentic portraits of important spokespeople, insight into the company, and illustrations of products. In short, you need atmospheric images that convey values and culture.
  • Prepare images for media use: An effective image only reveals its full potential when it is prepared appropriately for the channel in question. Different medium require different image formats, sizes, and resolutions. While print and press images are usually required in landscape format and high resolution (at least 300 dpi), social networks all have specific dimensions for placement and other image requirements.
  • Where can I find good pictures if I don’t have any of my own? Whether due to time constraints, a lack of budget, or limited resources if you don’t have your photos, professional image databases such as Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, iStock, Freepik, or Unsplash can help.
  • Consistent visual language as a factor for success: Strategically managing your image selection helps you create a clear brand and visual profile in the long term. Recurring colors, perspectives, and motifs create instant recognition —on your website, in your press kit, and across all media channels.
