If you’ve noticed that your Instagram posts are getting less reach, you’ve probably heard talk about there being a “shadowban” on the platform. For years, users have speculated about a possible hidden penalty that reduces the visibility of certain content without notification.

However, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has repeatedly reiterated that this practice does not exist.

So what’s really going on?  There are a couple of elements that are at play including  Instagram’s official stance and data-backed research and strategies from Metricool including answering these questions:

  • Does Instagram penalize content? According to Mosseri, Instagram does not arbitrarily hide or limit users’ content. Its algorithm prioritizes relevance and engagement, showing posts it considers most interesting to each user.
  • When does Instagram actually limit the reach of a post? While there is no such thing as a shadowban, Mosseri acknowledges that Instagram restricts the visibility of certain content in the Recommendations section.
  • How can you improve reach on Instagram? There are a few ways you can start to expand your reach
    • Check your account status
    • Go for high-value content
    • Optimize the format
    • Constant interaction
