In a world flooded with data and driven by visual media, data visualization has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for making sense of complex information. Attila Bátorfy, a prominent data visualization expert and speaker at the Worldcom EMEA Young Professionals Meeting, sat down to explore why this field is booming—and what challenges it now faces.

  • The Rise of Data Visualization: Data visualization’s rising significance is part of a two-decade trend fueled by several key factors: the advancement of technology, the increasing availability of user-friendly software, and the growing role of visuals in politics, media, and public discourse.
  • Purpose and Responsibility: With that accessibility comes responsibility. The main goal of data visualization depends on the intent of the creator. While many aim to inform, educate, or inspire, others may use visualizations to mislead or manipulate. As with fake news, bad data visualizations can distort reality—intentionally or not.
  • What Makes a Visualization “Good”?: Clarity, honesty, and thoughtful design are key. While many visualizations are technically accurate, they often add no real value—they oversimplify or present obvious data without insight. A strong visualization should elevate understanding, not just decorate the data.
  • The AI Factor: Artificial intelligence is already influencing data visualization, particularly in automating code generation and design. It is important not to fall into the trap of over-reliance on AI. He argues that AI lacks the human creativity and critical thinking necessary for truly impactful storytelling.

Data visualization is not just about making charts—it’s about telling the truth visually. To read the complete interview, visit the original article at: Data Visualization: Don’t Spare the Thinking!
