Consider Consent Before Using an AI Note-Taking Service

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the new wave in the business world. Everyone is scrambling to decide how to use it to make their work more efficient. One application is especially interesting for those who spend most of their days in meetings: AI note-taking.

The process is pretty simple. Once you’ve signed up for the service, it uses your calendar invites to dial into a meeting and takes detailed notes for you. Some even include audio clips for your benefit.

According to Worldcom partner Sachs Media Group, using AI note-takers raises some legal questions surrounding consent. There are several questions you should consider before adopting AI note-taking within your organization.

1. Do you live in a two-party consent state?

In 12 states in the United States, all parties must give consent in order to record the conversation. While some AI note-taking tools can be added to the calendar invites, this doesn’t necessarily pass as a clear request for consent in these states.

2. Did you notify meeting participants?

You should ask for consent at least twice when using an AI note-taker to record a meeting. Ask once before the meeting and once again when the meeting has actually started. It is important to make everyone aware that they are being recorded.
