As Organic Search Drops, AI Systems Take the Lead

In 2027, PR will stop being measured only by what journalists publish and start being measured by what AI systems repeat.

Impact on Organic Search in Spain

Spain offers an early glimpse of where the rest of the world is heading.  Here, organic search’s share of total web traffic has dropped from 52% to 40.7%, a fall roughly four times the global average., while AI referral traffic, still low, is growing 30% year on year.

Most of the impact is invisible, because people get their answers without clicking, and Spanish publishers are already paying the price, with media traffic losses estimated at up to 50% in early 2026.

What Spain is experiencing faster is likely what every market will face: earned media becomes the raw material AI engines use to decide which brands to recommend, so credible coverage in trusted local outlets matters more, not less.

Caution for International Brands

For international brands, being visible in English will not be enough, since AI answers in each language draw on local sources, and companies without local media presence, structured information and third-party validation risk simply not existing in the answer.

The question for 2027 is no longer whether the press talks about you, but whether AI does.
