So, What Makes a Website Accessible?

The goal of accessibility standards it to create an inclusive digital experiences for everyone. If you want to make sure your website is accessible, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide a detailed framework for making digital content accessible – covering everything from text and images to forms and multimedia. These guidelines are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The W3c is the leading global internet standards organization- these guidelines aim to promote a culture of accessibility online.

Primarily intended for professionals involved in developing web content and accessibility evaluation tools, the WCAG guidelines address a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, cognitive, and neurological.  Key elements of an accessible website include high color contrast for readability, keyboard-only navigation, image descriptions (alt text), video subtitles, and clear, understandable language.

In addition to the key elements, W3C advises creates advice to ensure content is compatible with various devices and assistive technologies, such as screen readers. These details significantly improve the digital experience for people with disabilities.

How Accessible Is My Website?

The WCAG defines three levels of accessibility compliance:

  • Basic Accessibility (Level A)
  • Intermediate Accessibility (Level AA)
  • Advanced Accessibility (Level AAA)

Each level includes specific criteria related to user experience, visual and auditory perception, responsive design, and more. The appropriate level of compliance will vary depending on the nature of the product or service.

What happens if your website doesn’t comply?

Failure to meet the requirements of the European Accessibility Act or  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) can have serious consequences. For companies who are in violation of these regulations, there have been financial penalties and restrictions on market access. It can also damage brand reputation, potentially leading to legal disputes and a loss of consumer trust.
