According to a statistics from Backlinko [1], over 548 million people listen to podcasts regularly worldwide.  Ad spending on the platform is eexpected to hit 4.46 billion by the end of the year. With the rise of advanced and convenient technology, podcasting is no longer a specialized niche. It has created an environment where almost anyone can launch and grow a show.

However, doing it will is another story. For companies and brands looking to capitalize on the popularity of podcasting, here are five of the top mistakes to avoid when first starting a podcast.

  1. Mistake to Avoid: Don’t Wing It: You may be an expert in your field and may have a great personality. You may even have a great network of potential guests and a witty name for your show. Don’t think that just because you have a few ideas, the rest will fall into place.
  2. Don’t treat your show like an ad for your company, product, or services: Your company, product, or idea may be interesting but don’t overdo it. Instead, podcast topics and content should focus on different areas of marketing and PR that are both educational and entertaining for our listeners.
  3. Don’t underestimate the power of promotion:  The perfect guest lineup, interesting topics, and a strong idea won’t be enough to push the needle. Don’t be alarmed; basic paid ad promotion is enough as long as you have a compelling organic strategy.
  4. Don’t underestimate the work involved:  From editing episodes to engineering a compelling marketing plan, there is a lot of work to do. It may be beneficial to hire a small team to help with the creation of your show.
  5. Don’t give up: Work through the obstacles to get the reward. Starting and growing a successful podcast can be difficult, but it can also be rewarding.
